美國總統歐巴馬的文學成就在美國歷任在位總統中非常罕見，他曾撰寫過《以父之名：歐巴馬的夢想之路》（Dreams from My Father）、《勇往直前》（The Audacity of Hope）兩本著作，各界佳評如潮，雙雙大賣，如今歐巴馬即將在明年1月卸任，各大出版商正摩拳擦掌準備爭取歐巴馬回憶錄。

歐巴馬在1995年出版的自傳《以父之名》展現細膩文采，獲葛萊美最佳朗讀專輯獎，獲獎鼓勵歐巴馬在2006年出第二本書《勇往直前》，這本書記述他在參議院的年代以及他的政策立場，這兩本書的紙本和電子書銷量都超過300萬本。

歐巴馬仍跟皇冠出版集團（Crown）有一個出書合約，目前並不清楚皇冠是否會發行歐巴馬的回憶錄。根據歐巴馬在2004年揭露的財務狀況，他跟皇冠母公司藍燈書屋（Random House）簽下三本共190萬美元的出書合約。

出版界人士預料，皇冠一定想出歐巴馬下一本書。出版界引頸期待歐巴馬能出總統回憶錄，還有人認為這本書可望成為傳世之作，100年後仍值得一讀。

出版界人士認為，等到歐巴馬卸任後回憶錄才有可能上市，他拿到的出書價碼可望跟美國前總統柯林頓旗鼓相當，柯林頓在2004年出回憶錄《我的人生》（My Life），出版社Alfred Knopf付給他的價碼是1,500萬美元，最後《我的人生》這本著作的銷量賣到290萬本。

美國第一夫人蜜雪兒．歐巴馬（Michelle Obama）的文學造詣則未經考驗，但華爾街日報和NBC的民調顯示，她的支持率高達59%，是最受民眾喜愛的美國公眾人物之一。

關於歐巴馬褪去政治光環後將何去何從的問題，英國每日郵報報導，歐巴馬和蜜雪兒已決定出書「謀生」，出版界估算這對夫婦若出書最多可進帳4,500萬美元。

在美國，總統卸任後大多會到處進行演講或出書，柯林頓夫婦在2001年至2015年間的收入高達1.53億美元，據估計美國前總統布希卸任後已賺了幾千萬美元。

除了歐巴馬夫婦以外，出版商也對歐巴馬政府的現任、離任官員很感興趣。

美國副總統拜登（Joe Biden）曾在2007年出版自傳《信守承諾》（Promises to Keep），原本這本書乏人問津，但在歐巴馬選他當副手後，銷售量起死回生，擠入邦諾書店暢銷書前十名。

出版社估拜登下一本書的價碼大約是100萬美元。今年10月底他被問到離開白宮後有何計畫時，他說可能會寫本書，但內容可能會讓大家失望，這本書不會毫無保留，不會什麼都寫。拜登長子波．拜登（Beau Biden）去年因腦癌病逝，年僅46歲。
